I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving holiday with family, friends, and plenty to eat. Hopefully, those guys who decided to fish Thanksgiving morning have recovered from the physical and verbal wounds which they received upon returning home.
It appears that the fishing has improved dramatically with the cool weather as shown by the huge weigh-in at the November tournament. It was notable that the fish were of such uniform size that only three pounds separated first from eleventh place in the tournament. It appeared that the bite was on and a good time was had by all the participants. Congratulations to Team Laid Back for their first place finish in the 2011 Team Tournament Standings. They obviously heard Lee Thomas preach “consistency” throughout the years, as that was their winning strategy. As we go into the December Individual Tournament the standings are very tight among the top ten, so it will be interesting to see who finally emerges with the jacket at the January banquet.
As we approach the new year, please be thinking about who you will vote for at the December meeting from the slate of nominees announced earlier this month or from any nominations that may be received from the floor at the December meeting.
Also, please remember to make your plans to attend the Angler of the Year Banquet on January 8th at Saluda Shoals Park. Marshall West has put together a comfortable venue and a great catered meal for us to enjoy this fun event. Donnie Christopher will sell you a lottery ticket in a heart beat for the grand prize which I’m sure he will describe at the next meeting.
In 2012, we will be going to a team format for ten of our tournaments. Make your plans now to team up in order to be ready for that first tournament on January 15, 2012. I think this will be an exciting schedule and will continue our spirit of friendly competition and fellowship on the water.
I have enjoyed being the president of Midlands Striper Club for the past two years and have been honored to hold that position. A sincere thank you to everyone who has lent a hand during that period of time to support this wonderful organization.

Team Laid Back Continues Winning Ways In 2012 With January Win. Brian Baire Takes Big Fish.

Midlands Striper Club held its first monthly tournament of 2012 on January 21st out of Spinners Resort on Lake Murray. Although the weather did not cooperate for the entire event, 66 anglers fishing in 28 teams participated. Thunder storms eventually forced participating teams off the lake for safety. Nearly all boats caught legal size fish, and the teams brought 83 striped bass to the scales. The weigh-in was filled with great fellowship and fun, even though the thunder and lightning continued to be seen and heard frequently outside the weigh-in shelter.
MSC changed their tournament rules for 2012, making all ten points events "team boat” tournaments. The change will hopefully encourage participating teams to invite new members and compete at a team boat level rather than on an individual angler basis. The decision was a tough one for the club, but with record numbers of anglers and boats showing up for the new format, it ensured the club the right choice was made.
Finishing in first place was Team Laid Back, consisting of Captain David Richardson, his son and 2011 Angler of the Year Tristan Richardson, both of Aiken, SC, fishing with Phillip Ramsey and his son John Ramsey, both from New Ellington, S.C. Team Laid Back’s winning creel of 4 fish weighed 31 lbs 3 ozs. Team Laid Back continued its winning ways…as the team also won MSC Team of the Year for 2011.
Finishing second was Team Landlocked, consisting of Captain Richy Brensinger and Joey Smoak, both from Lexington SC, and Wayne Bell from Prosperity SC. Team Landlocked’s 4 fish creel weighed 29 lbs 14 ozs. In third place was Team One Way, consisting of Captain Tommy Richardson and his sons Caleb and Jaime, all from Swansea SC and Wesley Kanard from Aiken SC. Team One Way’s 4 fish creel tipped the scales at 28 lbs 13 ozs.
Nichols Store of Rock Hill sponsors MSC’s Largest Striped Bass in each event and the January award went to Team Barely Tyme, Captained by Bryan Baire of Rock Hill SC, with a single striper tipping the scales at 12 lbs even. West Marine of Columbia SC sponsors our smallest creel for each event and the award went to Team Hammer Head, Captain Wynn Corely of Lexington SC.
L to R: Team Laid Back. Tristan Richardson, David Richardson, John Ramsey, Phillip Ramsey.
